- For the cookies:
- 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder (dark or black cocoa for an intense color)
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1 large egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/4 cup black food coloring (optional, for a more intense look)
- For the gilding:
- Edible gold leaf or edible gold paint
- Small brush for applying gold leaf
- Preheat the oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Prepare the dough: In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
- Mix the wet ingredients: In a large bowl, cream together the butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the egg and vanilla extract until fully combined.
- Add dry to wet: Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. Add black food coloring, if using, and mix until the dough reaches your desired shade of black.
- Shape the cookies: Scoop out tablespoon-sized balls of dough and place them on the prepared baking sheet. Flatten slightly with your hands.
- Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 10-12 minutes, or until the cookies are set around the edges but still soft in the center. Let cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
- Apply the gilding: Once the cookies are completely cool, use a small brush to carefully apply edible gold leaf or edible gold paint in patterns that mimic insect wings, bodies, or other natural designs.
