For the Casserole:

  • 8 slices of bread (white or whole wheat)
  • 4 tablespoons butter, softened
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 6 large eggs
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder (optional)
  • Chopped fresh herbs (optional): parsley, chives, or thyme for garnish

Instructions

Prepare the Bread

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Butter the Bread: Spread softened butter on one side of each slice of bread.
  3. Assemble Bread: Layer half of the bread slices in a greased 9×13-inch baking dish, buttered side up.

Add Cheese

  1. Layer Cheese: Sprinkle half of the shredded cheddar and mozzarella cheese over the bread in the dish.
  2. Top with Remaining Bread: Place the remaining slices of bread on top, buttered side up.

Prepare the Egg Mixture

  1. Whisk Eggs and Milk: In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder until well combined.
  2. Pour Over Bread: Pour the egg mixture evenly over the layered bread and cheese.

Add Remaining Cheese

  1. Sprinkle Cheese: Top with the remaining cheese.

Bake

  1. Bake the Casserole: Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the eggs are set and the top is golden brown.
  2. Cool Slightly: Let the casserole cool for a few minutes before slicing.
