Scale

For the Grilled Cheese:

  • 4 slices of thick bread (sourdough, rustic white, or your favorite type)
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded cheese (cheddar, mozzarella, or a blend)
  • 2 medium tomatoes, sliced thinly
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
  • Fresh basil leaves (optional, for garnish)
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

Step 1: Preheat the Oven

  • Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Place the oven rack in the middle position.

Step 2: Prepare the Bread

  • Spread a thin layer of softened butter on one side of each slice of bread. If desired, sprinkle with garlic powder for extra flavor.
  • Place the buttered side down on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

Step 3: Add Cheese and Tomatoes

  • Sprinkle the shredded cheese generously on top of the unbuttered side of each bread slice.
  • Arrange the tomato slices on top of the cheese. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Step 4: Bake the Grilled Cheese

  • Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 8-10 minutes, or until the cheese is fully melted and bubbly, and the edges of the bread are golden brown.

Step 5: Garnish and Serve

  • Remove the grilled cheese from the oven. Garnish with fresh basil leaves if desired, and serve immediately.
