Ingredients

Scale

For the cake:

  • 1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
  • ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 ½ teaspoons baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • ½ cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup hot water (or hot coffee for extra depth of flavor)

For the frosting:

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 ½ cups powdered sugar
  • ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • ¼ cup heavy cream (add more for desired consistency)
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

Prepare the Cake:

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.
  3. Mix Wet Ingredients: In a large bowl, beat together the eggs, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until light and fluffy, about 2-3 minutes.
  4. Add Butter and Vanilla: Add the softened butter and vanilla extract to the egg mixture, and continue beating until fully combined.
  5. Combine Wet and Dry Ingredients: Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with buttermilk, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.
  6. Add Hot Water or Coffee: Slowly stir in the hot water (or coffee) until the batter is smooth and slightly thin.
  7. Bake the Cake: Pour the batter evenly into the prepared cake pans. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

Make the Frosting:

  1. Cream the Butter: In a medium bowl, beat the softened butter until creamy and smooth.
  2. Add Dry Ingredients: Sift together the powdered sugar and cocoa powder, then gradually add to the butter, mixing until fully incorporated.
  3. Add Wet Ingredients: Stir in the vanilla extract, heavy cream, and a pinch of salt. Beat on high for 3-5 minutes, adding more cream if necessary to reach the desired frosting consistency.

Assemble the Cake:

  1. Frost the Cake: Once the cakes are completely cooled, spread a layer of frosting on top of the first cake layer. Place the second layer on top and frost the top and sides of the entire cake.
  2. Decorate (Optional): If desired, garnish the cake with chocolate shavings, sprinkles, or any other decorations to add a personal touch.
