Follow these steps to create your delicious Spicy Edamame Yaki Onigiri:
- Rinse the Rice: Start by rinsing the short-grain rice under cold water until the water runs clear. This will remove excess starch.
- Cook the Rice: In a pot, combine the rinsed rice and water. Bring to a boil, then reduce to low heat and cover. Cook for about 15-20 minutes or until the water is absorbed.
- Prepare Edamame Filling: If using frozen edamame, cook according to package instructions. Once cooked, mash the edamame slightly in a bowl.
- Add Flavors: To the edamame, add soy sauce, sriracha sauce, sesame oil, chopped green onions, and salt. Mix well until combined.
- Shape the Onigiri: Once the rice is cooked, let it cool slightly. With wet hands, take a scoop of rice and flatten it in your palm. Place a small spoonful of the edamame mixture in the center, then mold the rice around it to form a triangle or oval shape. Repeat until all rice and filling are used.
- Grill the Onigiri: Heat a non-stick skillet over medium heat. Lightly oil the pan and place the shaped onigiri in the skillet. Cook until golden and crispy, about 3-4 minutes on each side.
- Finish with Sea Salt: Once the onigiri are grilled to perfection, sprinkle with sea salt for added flavor and serve hot.
- Optional – Add Nori: If desired, wrap the onigiri with nori strips for an authentic touch.
